Winner of Project Runway Season 14
Ashley Nell Tipton, 24, was born and raised in San Diego, California. The youngest of four children she had an early passion for fashion. Tipton remembers discovering her love of sewing when she would design clothes for her Barbie’s. She learned to sew on her grandmother’s sewing machine when she was just seven years old.
Tipton created her first fashion collection during her senior year in high school. She chose to attend Fashion Careers College after graduating high school where she graduated with a Fashion Design degree in 2012. Her senior collection at FCC was highlighted in the annual Golden Hanger Fashion Awards in 2012.
Tipton showed her collection at New York’s Full Figured Fashion Week in 2012 where she received rave reviews from the press. One of her goals is to help full-figured women feel good in what they wear and she hopes to be “THE” Full-Figured Fashion Designer. She understands what plus women want and would like to give curvy girls a chance to show their style with chic edginess.
She says: “My collection is a full figured collection for the woman in her 20’s or 30’s who is a fashionista! My collection is an artful combination of glamour and street fashion. I love color and I’m very inspired by curvy women and helping them feel good in their clothes. I want to offer plus size women the opportunity to wear fun colors and to avoid the pit-falls of only wearing black because many curvy girls think it is the only color that is slimming.”
Tipton has chosen to go against the plus size industry grain and creates a collection that is full of bright hues and bold patterns. She says: “I pictured my muse roaming the streets of Paris unabashed and feeling confident in their stride while wearing designs that are not seen in full figure fashions today. The clothing line is filled with bold colors and finesse… just like me!”
Ms. Tipton began selling her collection online after finishing design school and began garnering a strong loyal following of customers. Her goal was to create fun and vibrate fashions for the plus size woman. She has sold her collection to women all over the world.
In the spring of 2015 Ms. Tipton lost her grandmother. The same week her grandmother passed she had the opportunity to apply to be on Lifetime’s Project Runway. Even though she was grieving and saddened by her grandmother’s death, she knew she needed to take the opportunity to apply to be on the show. She felt her grandmother would want her to go for it and make her dream of being on the show into reality. She made it through all the interviews and was invited to be on the 2015 season of Project Runway. During the filming of the show she has shown her talent, tenacity and professionalism. She won two of the challenges and became a fan favorite on the show. Ms. Tipton has made it to the finale and will be highlighted on the runway at New York Fashion Week.
Ms. Tipton is the currently winner of Project Runway Season 14 and is working on several exciting projects and will re-launching her website in early 2016.
